The Severn Barrage

The Tidal Barrage.

The photograph in the adjacent image is of a tidal barrage in France. The differnce between the low and high tide level of a tidal riveris its tidal range and the potential of that river to be harnessed to produce electrical power. The tidal range of the Severn river is aproximately 14 metres (depending on the tide of course) making it the third greatest range in the world. A tidal barrage would make this one of the largest renewable energy projects in the world. In June 2013 the The Severn river has the third graetest difference in the world. In June 2013 the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee published its findings after an eight month study of the arguments for and against the Barrage. MPs said the case for the barrage was unproven. They were not convinced the economic case was strong enough and said the developer, Hafren Power, had failed to answer serious environmental and economic concerns?
